Good morning, I am your therapist…

A couple of years ago my son and I went to a speech therapist. According to school he had problems pronouncing the “rrrrrr” and they suggested us to get professional help…We received a list of therapists and picked one close to where we live.

I can still see it cleary in my mind ! It felt as if we were entering a dark and dusty attic. An old female therapist was seated at her desk, she seemed to be grown into her dark and brownish furniture. You would have wanted to poke her too to see if she were death…

But she came to senses and she started to show my son some pictures… She talked with a cold and severe voice, almost robotic. It left me imagining where her on/off button was.

Our hyper sensitive antennas were activated. My son turned his face towards me. What followed was a wordless conversation :

“This is creepy mom !”

“I know son ! Are you pondering what I am pondering ?”

“I wanna leave this place mom !”

“It looks surreal son, I’ll be happy too when we’re out of here….”

Have you ever experienced something like this ? You are looking for a good counselor, assistent, doctor, therapist…only to find out that you have been making the wrong choice. You are stuck with a creep and it just doesn’t feel good. There is lack of understanding, there is lack of real communication.

And these talks often take place in a strange, unusual, old, dusty environment… Or worse : a bright white clinical one ! Leaving you think nutty nurses can come out of the closet and handcuff you any minute….You start to feel odd and uncomfortable…

As if that looks inviting to start talking about your mental problems, your darkest secrets and deepest fears…

Not to mention you are standing face to face with the stereotype of all therapists : the old grumpy one ! Do you believe children can’t spot adult arrogance or faked interest ?

Wouldn’t you like to talk to someone who is passionate and excited and believe in what they are doing ? Someone who says : “Hey welcome dear friend ! Are you ready ?”

While putting a helmet in your hands that person says : “It’s going to be one hell of a ride ! Bumpy and usually with many upside downs. But I am your copilot. Fasten your seatbelt !”

I would rather have a provocative coach, who pushed me to the limits, who pushed several buttons at once but whose words wouldn’t just fade away.

I would rather like to have someone by my side who would loudly honk the horn during the ride…
